Thirty-five years ago, on August 27, 1991, the Delta State was created with Asaba as its capital, marking the beginning of an epoch in the history of the Anioma people. A retrospective peep through the crevice of our geopolitical history reveals this milestone followed years of collective agitation that indeed dates as far back as the 1950s.
In 1951, Chief Dennis Osadebay, a prominent Anioma leader who later became the first Premier of the Midwest Region, and widely regarded as the founding father of the Anioma identity and statehood reportedly coined the term "Anioma" (an acronym for Aniocha, Ndokwa, Ika, and Oshimili peoples).
Sources indicate that by 1954, the people of then Asaba and Aboh divisions made a formal request to the colonial government in London for the creation of a West Niger Province. This is often regarded as the first documented petition and marks the beginning of organized agitation, predating Nigeria's independence in 1960.
So in 1991, Asaba was named the capital of the newly created Delta state, perhaps, to assuage the people of Anioma for the obvious denial of a new state of their own. But be that as it may, since becoming the Delta State capital, Asaba has transformed from a quiet riverine settlement into one of Nigeria's fastest-growing cities, expanding into neighbouring towns like Igbuzor, Okpanam and Ugbolu.
For us, these past 35 years stand as a testament to resilience, innovation, cultural stability, and developmental progress. The visible developmental transformation of the capital territory driven by the determination of a people whose greatest resource is not beneath the soil, but within their character, talent, and aspirations, remains a towering evidence of not only what has been achieved, but of the many possibilities within the Anioma nation.
This is the reason AniomaOnline has chosen this year to honour our past and to celebrate our progress that’s shaping our future.
This significant year presents an opportunity for reflection. It calls on us to honour the visionaries who laid the foundation and celebrate the contributions of our people.
As we look to the future, the task before us is clear: to promote investment opportunities, strengthen our traditional institutions, empower our youth, protect our communities and farmlands, and foster a development agenda that leaves no community behind.
Happy 35th Anniversary, Delta State. Long live the Anioma nation!
