THE UNIQUENESS OF ABAVO KINGDOM

Abavo Kingdom remains one of the most unique and historically significant communities in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Located in the Delta North Senatorial District, the agrarian kingdom is widely known for its rich cultural heritage, peaceful coexistence, agricultural strength and communal structure which distinguishes it from many other communities in the state.

The autonomous kingdom is made up of five traditional towns namely Ogbe Obi, Igbogili, Azuowa, Udomi and Obiayima.

These traditional towns have over the years maintained strong cultural bonds and unity despite their distinct identities and community structures.

The five traditional towns are further divided into seventeen communities.

By this natural arrangement, Ogbe Obi comprises Idumugbo, Ogbeidibon and Ogbeohulor while Igbogili consists of Ogbeisogban, Alidogwu and Oriokan/Aliodu.

These communities continue to contribute significantly to the traditional, social and economic growth of the kingdom.

Azuowa, another important traditional town in the kingdom, is made up of Okpe, Oyoko, Ekwueze and Ekwuoma.

Udomi on its part consists of Ekuma, Imiele, Alizormor and Aliohen, while Obiayima is made up of Irenuma, Ogbeobi Obiayima and Ogbeobi Udomi.

The communal arrangement reflects the deep traditional heritage and organised settlement pattern of the Abavo people.

Education has remained one of the strong pillars of development in the kingdom.

Available records indicate that Abavo has fourteen public primary schools, seven public secondary schools and other private schools spread across the various towns and communities.

These institutions have continued to produce professionals and notable personalities contributing to national development in different fields.

In the healthcare sector, the kingdom is served by one General Hospital and six Primary Health Care Centres providing medical services to residents.

Though the facilities have helped improve healthcare delivery in the area, residents believe there is still need for expansion and modernisation to meet growing population demands.

Administratively,Abavo has a monarchical government that is based on heridity.

Geographically, Abavo occupies a landmass of about seventy square kilometres, approximately forty-two square miles, making it one of the prominent communities in the Ika nation.

Its fertile land and favourable environment have continued to support large-scale farming activities over the years.

Historically, the population of Abavo stood at 14,248 according to the 1963 census, but current estimates place the figure at over sixty thousand people.

The rapid increase in population reflects the steady growth and expansion of the kingdom over the decades.

The people of Abavo are globally known for farming both for subsistence and commercial purposes.

The community has long been recognised for the production of food crops and other agricultural products which contribute immensely to the local economy and food supply within and outside Delta State.

Despite its uniqueness and economic potential, Abavo Kingdom continues to face serious challenges, particularly insecurity and the deplorable condition of the Agbor/Amukpe road.

Residents lament that the road has become almost impassable, crippling transportation, commercial activities and economic growth within the kingdom.

One of the greatest victims of the bad road is the once vibrant Oyoko Market which was previously known for attracting traders and buyers from different parts of the country.

Today, economic activities in the market have drastically reduced due to poor accessibility caused by the failed road infrastructure.

There have been growing calls on both the federal and Delta State governments to urgently rehabilitate the Agbor/Amukpe road to restore economic activities and improve the living conditions of residents.

Stakeholders believe that revamping the road network will not only revive the once thriving Oyoko Market but also unlock the enormous agricultural and commercial potential of Abavo Kingdom.

In conclusion, addressing the basic needs of the Abavo kingdom will ultimately enable it to regain its lost glory.

The best time to do this is now.

May God bless Abavo Kingdom
